The Gemini macOS app is the desktop AI assistant available at no cost in all languages and countries where the Gemini app is supported. This app runs exclusively on Apple Silicon MacBooks and requires macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later. Feature availability varies.

There are several quick ways to access Gemini app on your desktop:

• Customizable shortcuts: Press Option + Space to open the mini chat, or Option + Shift + Space for the full chat experience.

• Menu bar: Select the Gemini icon located in the menu bar at the top of your screen.

• Mac Dock: Launch the app directly by clicking its icon in the Dock.

You can easily share your screen with Gemini for a more tailored answer. Simply open the specific window that you want to share and press both Command keys.

Gemini will use what's visible in the forefront window as context for your chat. To let it read full pages in the browser or access all files saved in a shared local folder, go to your macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security, and enable Accessibility for Gemini.

You can change the window sharing hotkey in the Gemini app settings.

There are a couple of different ways to use your voice to create and write across your desktop:

• Dictate anywhere: Speak naturally into any text field to drop clean text right at your cursor.

• Refine text: Highlight text in any app and tell Gemini how to change it, like tweaking tone, rewriting, or formatting..

• Summarize files: Highlight documents, PDFs, or images on your desktop and ask Gemini to extract key details.

• Generate images: Describe a visual prompt by voice to generate and insert images directly into your workspace.

How to use it: Press and hold the FN 🌐 key and start speaking. Release the key to submit your request, and Gemini will drop the response directly in your active window.

• Intelligent dictation: Available by default. It automatically cleans up filler words, catches mid-sentence corrections on the fly, and neatly formats your text into bullet points and structured paragraphs.

• Reasoning tasks with screen context: Opt-in required. Helpful for tasks beyond voice-to-text dictation, such as performing edits on the screen content or generating images. Turn on reasoning in the Gemini app settings under the Speak to Window tab. Once enabled, Gemini intelligently distinguishes between dictation and reasoning tasks.

Tips:

• For longer dictation, double-tap the FN key to start hands-free recording and tap again to finish. You can also trigger the feature by clicking the Speak to Window icon in the prompt bar.

• Go to Settings > Speak to Window to toggle reasoning on or off, or to customize your shortcut keys.

• To give Gemini specific context on text or an image, highlight it, long-press FN key and start speaking. Deselect the info after starting Speak to Window so Gemini won’t replace it.

The new feature is first rolling out in English to all users in the Gemini macOS app.

Because the Gemini macOS app is native to the Mac operating system, it can interact directly with your local files and is the most seamless way to access AI on Mac. To ensure your privacy, Gemini Spark only has access to the specific directories you explicitly connect to it. This keeps your private information protected while still letting Gemini Spark do the heavy lifting. Under your direction, Gemini Spark can prioritize Mac automation, organize and rename files in your connected folders, or gather scattered information from them to update and summarize content in Google Docs and Sheets.
