Introducing Gemini, your new personal AI assistant

Since 2016, Google Assistant has helped millions of people get more done on the go, right from their phones. During that time, we've heard from you that you want so much more from your assistant—one that’s personalized to you, that you can talk to naturally and that can help you get more done. That’s why we’ve reimagined what an assistant can be on your phone, rebuilt with Google's most capable AI models.

Gemini is a new kind of AI assistant, built from the ground up with advanced language understanding and reasoning. We're incredibly excited that Gemini can not only provide the hands-free help that you love from Google Assistant, but can go far beyond in conversationality and richness of the tasks it can help with. In side-by-side testing, we’ve seen that people are more successful with Gemini because of its ability to better understand natural language.

Here’s how Gemini compares to Google Assistant, and some new ways it can help you. We aim to make Gemini the most helpful and personal AI assistant and are laser focused on improving it rapidly with your feedback. We’ll update this page with these improvements, and you can always check Gemini's release updates for more news. Ready to jump right in? Try Gemini today.

Comparing Gemini with Google Assistant

Gemini is capable of doing some truly amazing things. It represents a fundamental shift in how we can interact with AI to get things done. As you start using Gemini, here are some important things to know:

  • Because Gemini can understand natural language, you can talk or write to it just like you would to a personal assistant.

  • Gemini is built on large and sophisticated AI models, which means in some instances simple requests might take longer than with Google Assistant. This is something we’re actively working on, so expect Gemini to continue to get faster.

  • While Gemini can answer many more questions than Google Assistant, Gemini might not always get it right. You can check Gemini’s responses with our double-check feature, review the sources that Gemini shares in many of its responses, or use Google Search for critical facts.

Here’s a list of popular features from Google Assistant that are available now or coming soon to Gemini. Please keep in mind that this only applies to your phone and other eligible Android devices.

Enhanced with AI. You can type or say your request using natural language and also get help with more complex tasks, like using multiple apps together. New features will begin rolling out today.

A new kind of help

Here are a few more examples of the exciting things you can do with Gemini as your new assistant.

“Write a formal email to my landlord that my A/C unit is broken. Make it sound urgent but still polite.”

Gemini can save you time by crafting the perfectly worded email. The more info you share about what you want in your message, the more customized the response will be.

“Create an image of a cat riding a BMX bike doing a jump off of a dune on the moon next to a landing module.”

Biking on the moon, Jupiter, Mars—you name it. Gemini can help you explore the outer bounds of your imagination.

“Check the Sociology 101 syllabus in my Google Drive and list all of my deadlines.”

Gemini can multitask so you don’t have to. It can look up info or find answers to questions, and works with many of your Google apps to get things done.

“My niece and nephew are coming over this weekend, and I need ideas for something fun and educational we can do together, maybe something with chemistry… something a bit unusual?”

You can go Live with Gemini to have natural, free flowing conversations when you want to brainstorm, plan, explore new ideas, or just talk things out.

“I’m cooking for my friends this weekend. Create a 3-course Mediterranean meal, including dessert, and keep in mind that one person is vegetarian and another is allergic to nuts.”

Gemini can help you plan for your next dinner party with custom recipes, a curated playlist, and the fastest way to clean a kitchen.

We're constantly learning from your feedback and working to make Gemini even faster and more capable over time, but we won’t always get it right. You can share feedback with us by giving any Gemini response a thumbs up or down, and then sharing your thoughts. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • Gemini is our AI-powered assistant, that offers the hands-free help that you love from Google Assistant, but can go far beyond in conversationality and complexity of the tasks it can help with.

  • This helpful chart lists many of the features you’re used to from the Google Assistant, and how Gemini makes them even better.

  • Additionally, Gemini is natively multi-modal and agentic, so you can have free-flowing conversations with Gemini and it can complete tasks on your behalf.

  • “Hey Google” will continue to work as a hotword.

  • As we continue to upgrade devices to Gemini, “Hey Google” will invoke Gemini if Gemini is available on that device.

  • In other cases where Gemini has not yet been made available, “Hey Google” will continue to invoke the Google Assistant.

In an effort to make the upgrade as seamless as possible, we will use some preferences and history from Google Assistant when we upgrade your device to Gemini. For example, in most countries when you transition to Gemini, we will automatically check your recent call and message history from Google Assistant to better identify who you want to call or message on Gemini.

If you use Google Assistant with your work or school account, you will also transition from Google Assistant to Gemini later this year. Your Google Workspace admin will receive notice before the transition happens, and the experience may vary based on what Gemini functionality your admin has provided access to.
